The Intention of this Petition is in the name of the Greatest Good of all Individuals in and around Lethbridge, as nothing happens in isolation. The Earth and the Sky, the Sun and the Water, the Dears and the Beavers, the Flowers and the Trees, the Birds, and the Bees; the creatures who swim, and those who crawl, the ones who slither, those who climb and those that fly, and all those who enjoy nature, and life, in peace.
THANK YOU!

"The Oldman River basin is the traditional territory of the Piikani Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy.

The Oldman River is named after Napi, the Old Man,
who is the creator of the Earth and all its living inhabitants.
The Old Man’s Playing Ground,
a place of great cultural significance where Piikani people gathered to play games,
is located along the headwaters of the Oldman River."

Personally, I love the name: "The Old Man River", "Belly River", and "Peace Park", which was proposed as a named change in 2020.

~ Rosie Digout, which calls for the "Change of All Culturally Offensive Names" such as the name "Indian", used in the naming of Parks and Neighbourhoods.  For Example:  "Indian Battle Park".

"The term Indian, when used to identify Indigenous peoples in South, Central and North America, is considered outdated and offensive. In Canada, the term has been used historically to refer to Indigenous peoples, but it also has modern legal significance. It is used to refer to legally defined identities set out in the Indian Act, such as Indian Status."

WHO IS NAPI?!

"Napi is a trickster. All First Nations have what we call "A Trickster". In some places its Ableegumooch (Mi'kmaq Trickster Animal), in some its Sitconski (Assiniboine Trickster), and for others it could be Raven (Northwest Coast Tribes). Where we live it's "The Old Man, It's Napi (Blackfoot Trickster God). He's powerful and he's foolish; very foolish, just like humans. Although Napi represnts our human side, he tells us how Not to be. The Blackfoot trickster is a shape-shifter." ~ Carl Brave Rock
The Cree Peoples know him Wesakechak (also spelled Wisakedjak); the benevolent culture hero of the Cree tribe (sometimes referred to as a “transformer” by folklorists.
